Junior Formula: Mike Conway Bounces Back To Seventh Quickest In Testing
Mike Conway

Mike Conway produced an impressive performance in this week’s Paul Ricard GP2 testing, following a huge shunt on Tuesday caused by his throttle sticking open. The only British driver competing in the 2007 GP2 Series, Conway completed the mid-season test session at the Paul Ricard test track in France yesterday posting seventh quickest lap in the afternoon.

The test began earlier this week at the French test facility but with only four laps completed, Conway was in the barriers and with major damage to his racecar, unable to continue running. A new chassis was shipped over and with the Super Nova working long and tirelessly, it was ready for yesterday’s session.

The team’s efforts were rewarded with Conway immediately back on the pace, despite having lost nearly a day’s running to the rest of the field. By the end of the two sessions he had completed 51 laps, lying 16th quickest in the morning and 7th fastest at the end of the day.

Conway said after the test, “We lost a lot of time on the first day and that really set back our programme. The team worked really hard to get the new tub ready for me the next day and I’m very grateful to them for putting in the hours to get me back out running. We didn’t achieve as much as I would have liked to have done, so it was a bit disappointing. I know that we could have been quicker too, as my fastest lap was a little bit scrappy and I think there was more in the car; I wasn’t pushing as hard as I could have been either, but it was an improvement over our pace in the morning. “

The British driver flew back to the UK after the test and after sponsor duties at Silverstone for F1 testing and Goodwood Festival of Speed, he will travel to Magny Cours for the fourth race weekend of the GP2 Series. With a four week break from racing, Conway is looking forward to a return to the competitive environment and the two races at the F1 French Grand Prix.
