Over 130 cars and trucks will feature when the Shannon’s National Motor Racing Championships gets underway at Oran Park Raceway in Sydney this weekend. A late start to the year has enabled many of the categories involved to build strength throughout the off season and as a result some of the most competitive national-level racing seen at Oran Park for years will be staged at the popular circuit in New South Wales.
The second round of the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship, the ever-popular Biodiesel Supertruck Nationals and the Kerrick Sports Sedan Series will be joined by the Empire Change Exchange Commodore Cup and the Supaloc Australian Saloon Cars this weekend. A massive field of venerable Holden’s in the Lamont Construction HQ Holden Championship season opener will cap off a 21-race program that is set to thrill fans all weekend.
Racing begins Saturday afternoon and continues Sunday, with weekend passes available at the gate for just $45, or $20 for kids with children under 10 admitted free of charge. The event will also mark the first Nationals round with major sponsorship from Shannons, who have joined the series as a naming-rights sponsor for the next season.
“This is exactly where we want to be, ” said Shannons Insurance National Sales Manager, Paul Gates. “There are ten rounds, ten different national level motor racing categories racing at seven of the best tracks in Australia, so it’s a perfect fit”. “We see Shannons support of the Nationals as complimentary to our existing widespread support of Motorsport at club, state and national level”, added Gates.
