Timo Glock: “I had the problem of Andy Soucek slowing down thecar in the last sector”

Recently promoted BMW F1 Team reserve driver Timo Glock showed that his rivals should be under no illusions as to his desire or intent on the GP2 Series title, by blasting to his second consecutive pole position. The iSport International driver smashed the best time of his closest championship rival Lucas di Grassi by over three quarters of a second in the final moments of the session to take another two points for his championship tally. And with Andi Zuber pulling second out of the bag in the final seconds, it’s an iSport 1-2 for the first time since France.

Qualifying Report: With the threat of rain looming, the drivers were all out early to put in their banker laps. The drop in temperature made conditions perfect for the qualifying runs, and Timo and Lucas battled hard for top honours before a flurry of fast laps saw the top positions change dramatically as Giorgio Pantano set the early benchmark time of a 1:28.934 to lead Kazuki Nakajima, Lucas, Karun Chandhok, Ho Pin Tung and Mike Conway after ten minutes.

Giorgio further improved his time to a 1:28.411 as Timo put in the third best time, just ahead of Andi. Timo was pushing hard next time around, setting the best times in the first two sectors. A mistake in the final few corners however denied him any gain in position and with 10 minutes of the session left to run, Giorgio still commanded the times with Pastor Maldonado second.

With just a few minutes left on the clock, Lucas roared into P1 with a 1:28.349, but Timo was on a flyer and toppled the Brazilian with an incredible 1:27.566. With Andi moving into P2, just 0.190 behind his team-mate, Lucas was relegated to third, with Giorgio fourth, Pastor fifth and a lastgasp flyer from Adam Carroll netting the Ulsterman sixth spot on the grid.

1st Timo Glock: iSport International. 1:27.566

We had a pretty difficult time in free practice this morning when we weren’t 100% comfortable with the car, especially with Giorgio’s time we thought it would be pretty difficult in qualifying, but we made the right change in set up and the car was just perfect. I couldn’t quite get it together, and I made a mistake with the first set on the last corner, or else we would already be on a 27.5 with the first set, and then on the second set I had the problem of Andy Soucek slowing down the car in the last sector so I couldn’t get the temperature in the tyres, especially the fronts, so the first sector was not perfect: the following lap was a bit quicker but I had to stop it because of yellow flags. But at the end it was OK and we got the pole, and the 2 points, so I’m happy with it.

2nd Andi Zuber: iSport International. +0.190

It’s a pity because I had a little gearbox problem the whole of qualifying, and it cost me just a little bit of concentration and I made some little mistakes, but in total it’s a great result for us, the first two again, and tomorrow we fight for the race.

3rd Lucas di Grassi: ART Grand Prix. +0.783

The team did a very good job, and I’m happy again to be top three. It’s very, very difficult not to have some trouble in Hungary because somebody is slowing down, going off the track or doing something in front of you. I think being in the top three is a very good place to be, and depending on the weather we should be able to fight for the win: that’s what I’m here for.
