Homer Glen, Illinois native Eric Freiberg broke into the top-ten of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear points standings with a solid finish at Road Atlanta during the 10th Anniversary Petit Le Mans weekend at the Braselton, Georgia circuit this past weekend. Driving the #3 Racing For Kids liveried Northwest Autosport Mazda, the series rookie battled challenging track conditions to finish ninth in the 26-lap event.
“After raining most of the morning leading up to our race, the storm went away no more than five minutes before our race and everyone was scrambling to adjust their setups, ” Freiberg explained. “It was pretty intense out there as the track was pretty slippery from the rain and dirt that had been brought onto the track by the series that raced before us. ”
Fighting the lack of grip and the surviving a near-miss as another competitor spun next to him, Freiberg was relieved to bring the car home in the top-ten after a string of tough races battling electrical problems. “The car was fast right out of the trailer and while we dropped back a bit during the weekend the setup was right for the race, ” Freiberg revealed. “I knew my luck had changed for the better when another driver lost control right next to me but just missed my car and I was just an observer to the accident rather than a participant. It’s been a long road to get up into the top-ten in points so this is a good weekend. ”
The 21-year old accounting student now turns his focus to the season finale of the Star Mazda Championship in two weeks time at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. “I’m hoping to build on the results we had here this weekend as we finish out the year, ” he commented. “The team will spend a day testing at Infineon Raceway and then we’ll gear up for the finale! ”
