Report: Hopes For Ford Mustang FR500GT Spec Series To Run With 2008 Champ Cars

Ford hopes to race their FR500GT Mustang in conjunction with the Champ Car schedule in 2008. This would put Ford back into Champ Car after years of participation, most recently as the naming sponsor of the series. Ford discontinued their relationship with Champ Car in 2007 even though it was primarily in support of the Champ Car engines and no money was being paid to Champ Car for the naming rights.

Champ Car currently has a quality feeder series, the Atlantics, that is considered North America’s premier open-wheel road-course junior formula series. But the Ford FR500GT Series, if it happens, would be much more of a top tier series that could attract fans and give Champ Car much-needed manufacturer involvement to go along with their ESPN TV contract.
