Jamestown resident Mark Moore has found his place in the racing world as co-owner of Team Moore Racing, based in the Pittsboro area. It was founded in March 2007 by Moore and veteran driver Tom Wood.
Operating in conjunction with the IndyCar Series, teams compete for nearly $4 million in prize money each season. More than 20 drivers who have competed in the Firestone Indy Lights have raced in the IndyCar Series. Graduates of the series includes Marco Andretti, Hideki Mutoh, Ed Carpenter, Jay Howard, and Raphael Matos.
Moore was working with Kenn Hardley Racing, which was also based in Pittsboro, when he and Wood joined forces to start their own team.
Wood and Moore had been competing together since 2003. After gathering the right equipment and crew, the team took to the track for the first time at Homestead Miami Speedway in 2007 with Wood behind the wheel.
Following Wood’s retirement, the team captured the pole in May 2008 at the Milwaukee Mile. The team’s first win was at Infineon Raceway. Drivers for the team’s two-car effort included Jeff Simmons and Jonathan Klein, as well as rookies Pablo Donoso and Dillon Battistini.
Moore has more than 30 years of motorsports experience as an engineer, manager, crewman, and now owner. In addition to the day-to-day duties as team manager, Moore also serves as the lead engineer.
