Molson’s withdrawal following last year’s race left the event without a title sponsor. It’s a problem that has plagued other venues as well as the series’ teams and drivers. Johnson admitted that obtaining sponsors has been a huge challenge with most of the money flowing toward the NASCAR series. “We have to work to swing the money back to Champ Car, ” he said. “I’m not going to tell you it’s easy because it’s not. ” It’s a process, however, that may prove too slow for the likes of Canadian driver Andrew Ranger. It was just two years ago that the 20-year-old Roxton Pond, Que., native was hailed as the next superstar driver. However, with the season just weeks away, he’s without a ride; not because of his ability behind the wheel, but because he lacks a major backer. A number of other drivers appear to be in the same situation.
