Tristan Gommendy of PKV Racing won the provisional pole position at the Mont-Tremblant Champ Car race on Friday, edging series leader Sebastien Bourdais.
Gommendy, a rookie whose best starting position this season was fifth at Portland on June 10, earned one championship point and is guaranteed a spot on the front row of the grid for the race on Sunday.
A second qualifying session will be run on Saturday (2 p.m. ET).
Gommendy, who is 12th in drivers standings, posted a best lap on the 2.65-mile Mont-Tremblant Circuit of one minute 16.776 seconds.
