Friday Testing Could Soon Add Another Million In F1 Team’s Purses’

Formula One bosses are contemplating a shake-up of first day’s practice at each race to create extra excitement for fans and drivers, and better publicity ahead of each race.

The two 90-minute sessions are used for race preparation with the times almost meaningless to those in the grandstands. Some of the tens of millions which teams have saved from huge cuts to private testing could be ploughed into creating a better show for fans.

FOTA, the new organisation that represents the teams, has come to the conclusion Friday’s three hour testing is a damp squib for the public.

So they are discussing a range of changes, including a big prize money showdown on the first day of the action with the 20 drivers duelling for an all-or-nothing $1m purse - and even points that go towards the championship.
