A1 Team Lebanon will be representing the Arab world ‘down under’ in Australia this weekend, in the seventh round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, being held at Eastern Creek Raceway, near Sydney in New South Wales. A large Lebanese population living close to the venue is expected to turn out in force for the event and A1 Team Lebanon hopes that this support will spur on the team to race well in front of the local crowd.
Alex Khateeb, one of the team’s three drivers, has been selected to race this weekend in Australia and team mate Khalil Beschir will be alongside his team mate at Eastern Creek Raceway. Khateeb made his race debut for the team two weeks ago in Taupo, New Zealand, and returns to the A1 Team Lebanon car for a second weekend of racing. Basil Shaaban, another A1 Team Lebanon driver has not travelled to Australia for this weekend’s event, but will be closely following the fortunes of his team while they are ‘down under’.
The team has already been met with many of the local Lebanese team fans, with an A1 Team Lebanon karting event hosting over 150 fans in a highly charged endurance race which featured the team’s mechanics, engineers and drivers battling against the fans and drivers from other A1GP teams. With over 300,000 Lebanese living in Australia and the passion that they have for their home nation, the cedar tree flag is expected to be flying all around the circuit. In addition to the team’s own event, Beschir attended the official A1GP events which included jet boating in Sydney Harbour and an official launch event in Circular Quay in the city.
He says of the weekend, “Last year we didn’t know how much support we would have at the track and we were thrilled to see so many Lebanese flags flying and fans meeting us in the paddock, so I think there will be even more this time. I hope that we can have a good weekend and that they enjoy supporting us for the A1GP races. â€
Khateeb will take part in only his second full race weekend. A retirement and a 17th place finish in the New Zealand races for the young A1 Team Lebanon racer has ignited his passion and his determination to improve his performance in Australia. He says, “I had a tough time in Taupo with so much to learn in my first racing weekend, including the rolling start, pitstops, race strategy and hard, highly competitive racing. I think it’ll be a little easier now I’ve had the experience and I’m going to be focusing on a strong finish in both races. â€
The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, Sydney, Australia starts this Friday, 2 February, culminating with the Sprint and Feature races on Sunday 4 February. Race day includes a selection of support races with Australian F3 and GT championship races, and Historic racing.
