Despite changing weather conditions, packed grandstands of excited fans welcomed the first race of the new A1 Grand Prix series to Holland. A1 Team Switzerland had a positive finish to the first weekend of the new A1 Grand Prix season at Zandvoort today with Neel Jani taking points in the sprint race and his first podium finish of the season in the feature race.
Jani commented, “It was already a good sign in the sprint race as A1 Team Switzerland finished in fifth place and six points to open our scoring account for the season. ”
Jani qualified fourth on the grid for the sprint and feature races at a circuit he had never driven before. The Swiss driver finished the sprint race in fifth place and the feature race improved on his grid slot to finish on the podium.
Jani added, “A successful weekend. Too bad I never had time to practice on this track to learn the lines. I am very happy with the third place for the feature race and all the points from the sprint race. It was an interesting afternoon after a strong start. I was not struggling any longer with the lines and the race was long enough for good fights. I had a really good start and passed A1 GBR and battled my way to finish in third. ”
Max Welti team principal, A1 Team Switzerland commented: “The best race weekend our team’s history and an excellent result to start the season. It is important to collect not only six points but also a podium for our first weekend of our third season. This is positive for our third year’s operation. The whole team was very focused around a good race and no details were left to chance. ”

A1 Team Switzerland is the Swiss national team in motorsport representing its country in the unique global GP World Cup of motorsports. A1 Team Switzerland is entering its third year of racing in the A1 GP series. After 11 events and 22 races around the world, A1 Team Switzerland finished the inaugural A1GP season as runners-up, winning from pole position in Dubai. In 2006-2007 they again won from the pole in Malaysia, on the way to securing another top eight championship finish.
The drivers racing for their country in 2007-2008 will be Neel Jani and Sebastien Buemi. The rookie drivers will be Marcel Fässler, Tom Dillmann and two lady rookie drivers, Rahel Frey and Natacha Gachnang who participated successfully to a shootout event at Silverstone in September 2007. They will have the chance to represent their national team starting with the Brno Grand Prix, 2nd leg of the A1 GP Championship.
