With A change of team management, a sponsorship deal in the works and a potential seat in the Lotus F1 Racing driver development programme, Daim Hishammudin has plenty to look forward to this year.
One of three drivers in Axle BHPetrol Racing, Daim will be trained and developed by the team’s technical director Rodney Francis Magness - a former kart racing champion and member of A1 Team Malaysia.
After winning the Yamaha SL Cadet Cup in his rookie year in 2008 and the 2009 Rotax Max Challenge Asia event (Micro- Max class), Daim has a packed race schedule for 2010.
“I will be racing the full seasons of the Asian Open Karting Championship and the Yamaha SL Cup where I am aiming to win the title a second time,” Daim said, where he is based with his family.
“I may also return to Singapore to race in one round of the Singapore National Karting Championship.”
His new team is also planning to send the Lewis Hamilton fan to Europe for training in the middle of the year.
In addition, Yoong - who was officially appointed head of driver development in Asia for the new Malaysian F1 team Lotus F1 Racing last December - revealed that he is looking closely at taking Daim, among others, under his wing at Lotus F1 Racing.
Similar to other youth development programmes of McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull and Renault, the Lotus F1 Racing driver development programme plays a strategic role in searching for and developing young drivers, with the option of an F1 seat in the future if the driver shows promise.
