Despite recording his first victory of the season, Alonso would not say if he would remain at Renault for 2009.

“This does not change anything. I have always thought, and desired, to stay at Renault and that things return to be as they were a few years ago, but it changes nothing,” he said.

“In five minutes everything does not change, it has to be a well thought-out decision,” he added.

After winning the drivers’ championship with Renault in 2005 and 2006, Alonso spent an unhappy year with McLaren - where he was overshadowed by rookie Lewis Hamilton - before returning to the French constructor this year.

Alonso was dubbed the “Prince of Darkness” after he took the winning spot on Sunday ahead of Williams’ Nico Rosberg and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, who extended his championship lead despite finishing third.

“It was a great weekend for everyone in Formula One, the first night race,” he added. “We all had a new challenge in front of us and we will all be part of history.

“We (Renault) have had a tough season but now we are fighting for fourth place in the constructors’ standings. This victory is well deserved as the guys have worked extremely hard all season.”
