An Olympian Race Of Champions

Remember the old International Race of Champions, in which top stars from the various American racing series would compete in identical Camaros?

Well, watching the Olympics gave me quite the brainstorm: Why not put the best race car drivers from each country in similar cars and have some sort of international competition to see which nation is the best?

Imagine Formula One drivers or European road racers vying for supremacy against the good ol’ boys of NASCAR.

For instance, the United Kingdom could be represented by Lewis Hamilton (F-1), Dan Wheldon (IndyCar) and Dario Franchitti (IndyCar/NASCAR). How about Team Brazil with IndyCar stars Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan and Vitor Meira?

Maybe the drivers could take turns in the cars, rotating like they often do in road-racing series like the Rolex or American Le Mans. Or perhaps a team victor would be determined by which nation’s drivers compile the lowest combined finish.

It’ll probably never happen, but it’s a thought.
