David Coulthard cheekily apologised to authorities in Mumbai for speeding after hitting 160mph during a Formula One exhibition in the Indian city.
The former F1 ace had joked beforehand that he would ignore an imposed speed limit and go flat out on a specially prepared three-mile stretch of road as he didn’t intend to drive in Mumbai again.
But he wasn’t joking and put his foot down, clocking four times the prearranged “speed limit” on the city’s newly-opened Bandra-Worli highway.
The ex-racer was in Mumbai with his former team, Red Bull Racing, to help build up the appetite for an Indian race on the Formula One calendar. The Sun
Red Bull, the organisers of the event, had paid Rs 35 lakh to Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Of this, Rs 21 lakh was compensation for the day’s toll collection on the sea link and the remaining Rs 14 lakh was a deposit in case of an accident or damage to the bridge.
But with Coulthard driving way above the speed limit of 100 km per hour, MSRDC decided not to refund the deposit at all. India Today
“I have been driving over 200kmph all my life. It is difficult to keep my speed below 100kmph,” he said after the drive.
“Apparently there is a speed-limit.. about 50 or 100kms.
But the Maharashtra Government may take action against the organisers. The Maharahstra State Road Development Corporation is looking into whether Coulthard violated the 100 km per hour speed limit. NDTV.com
