Some of Europe’s grands prix may be dropped in favour of races in New York and Russia, according to Formula One’s rights holder, Bernie Ecclestone.
The sport’s impresario is considering introducing a street race in New Jersey in 2012 and recently revealed he is keen to see one in Russia too, it was reported today.
Ecclestone said there were three potential sites for the race outside Manhattan, while Moscow or the resort city Sochi, site of the next Winter Olympics, were the possible venues for Russia. The Guardian
Formula One could come to Russia as early as 2012, while a street race in or near New York could be part of the 2013 calendar.
The exact venues of the races have not yet been established but Ecclestone said the decision would be made “in the next couple of months”.
“We’re going to lose some races for sure, there are some races we can afford to lose without too much problem,” Ecclestone said. “I’ve spoken to the countries to see what we can come up with.” Viagogo
If the F1 boss reached his target, the motor series will have up to 20 events in its grand prix calendar.
Formula One races have been added in Asia and the Middle East, with Abu Dhabi making its debut last year and South Korea joining in 2010. Xinhua
The speculation is that the New York Grand Prix would be contested on a circuit less than 15 minutes outside Manhattan, while the Russian GP would be in Moscow or in a venue nearby where the 2014 Olympics are scheduled.
One thing is for certain; whether it’s 2012 or 2013, F1 has made no secret of the fact they need to be in the United States and there can be no doubt it will happen. Examiner.com
