Following Monday’s rain, it was back to sunnier weather for the eight teams in action on Tuesday, although they did have to contend with a damp track for the first two hours.

Glock made the most of the dry track, completing 141 laps - the second highest - with a best time of one minute 19.814 seconds.

“That was a productive day. This morning we were again a bit unlucky with the conditions, which made the race simulation quite tough. But it was useful to find out when to change to slick tyres and our pace wasn’t bad,” said the German.

“Then we got some dry running for the rest of the day. We did a lot of set-up work and late on we did some shorter runs to make it through the programme. We’ve made it through a lot of miles over these two days and we’re making useful progress.”

Massa was half a second behind in second spot as he returned to the track.

A race simulation during the morning saw him suffer a brief off at turn one while he also lost some track time due to an electrical issue on the F60. He went on to complete a total of 130 laps without further incident.

Alonso was third quickest for Renault on home soil and the busiest man on the day, completing more than 150 laps in the R29.

“Today was a very productive day as I managed to complete 152 laps which gave us lots of useful data,” he reflected.

“At this stage of the season it’s important to have as much time in the car as possible to get used to the new rules such as the moveable wings and the KERS system and so I’m happy to have done so much today.

“Everyday we keep learning new things and I’m feeling more and more comfortable in the car. Hopefully tomorrow we can have another dry day to build on the work we did today.”

Heikki Kovalainen was fourth for McLaren. The Finn started the day working with Bridgestone’s intermediate tyre before the team fitted 2009 front and rear wings to the MP4-24 to carry out set-up evaluation work.

Adrian Sutil continued Force India’s early fine start in their new car he concedes “has potential” with the fifth best time.

Mark Webber was sixth overall in his Red Bull, followed by the BMW Sauber of Robert Kubica, whilst Nico Rosberg brought up the rear in his Williams, almost 1.6secs off the pace.

“That was a productive day,” smiled Glock. “In the morning we were again a bit unlucky with the conditions, but then we got some dry running for the rest of the day.
