Felipe Massa’s hopes of a Formula 1 return have been boosted by positive test results, but Ferrari say they do not expect him to return this season.
Massa suffered serious head injuries at the Hungarian Grand Prix but his latest tests went well in Miami on Monday.
The Brazilian, 28, should return to training in preparation for a race return after plastic surgery this week.
Ferrari said they looked forward to “being able to count on Felipe 100% for the start of the next racing season”.
A statement on their website said: “Naturally the results were received with great joy and satisfaction at Maranello.”

Massa had said he was hoping to be fit in time for his home grand prix at Interlagos on Oct 18, but the 28 year-old now sounds more cautious.
“I’m very happy with the outcome of the tests,” Massa said. “After the small operation I’ll undergo in the next few days, I’ll finally be able to start doing gym exercise to get back in shape a bit and, after that, I’ll be able to start doing some testing on karts.
“On track with an F1 car? Let’s go one step at a time. Now I’m focused only on starting over with physical activity, which is already a nice step forward.”
Ferrari can now decide once and for all who will drive their second car for the remainder of the season. Luca Badoer is the man in possession but after two dreadful races on the trot it seems unlikely they will retain their 38 year-old test driver for Monza next week.
