Spain’s two-time world champion Fernando Alonso said he may quit Renault at the end of the year after a disappointing season so far with the French team.
After winning the drivers’ championship with Renault in 2005 and 2006, Alonso spent an unhappy year with McLaren before returning to the French constructor this year.
But he has had a poor start to this season, garnering only nine points from seven races and failing to finish the last Grand Prix, in Canada, after spinning off the track.
“I don’t know (if I will stay with Renault),” he said. “It’s not been a good year so far and it has been worse than we expected. We have not been on the podium, let alone won a race. We have a lot of work to do. I will take a decision on my future towards the end of the year when we’ll be able to see how far we have come.”
Despite his recent travails, however, Alonso was optimistic ahead of next weekend’s French grand prix. “In France we have a lot of support and for me it’s like racing in Barcelona,” he said. “During the week the team have worked hard and have made improvements with the car in testing. We have taken another step forward. I feel full of confidence at the moment and we are on the right track.”
The former two-time world champion’s future at Renault has been the subject of intense speculation with reports having the Spaniard move to rival Ferrari as early as next season.
Alonso signed a two year contract with Renault, however, it’s believed he has a performance-related clause in his deal which would allow him to leave the team at the end of this season.
