As speculation of a deal with BMW Sauber builds, Fernando Alonso says staying at Renault is his “first option” for the 2009 season:-
“I am trying to find the best place that I can be,” the former double World Champion said.
“I know all the people and that things can go well here. They are preparing the new car but I have not seen much of it. All the teams are very optimistic about next year. But Renault have given me two championship cars and so it is easier to believe what they tell me over the others,” Alonso said.
While BMW Team principal Mario Theissen revealed at the Italian Grand Prix that they have delayed the decision on their driver line-up for next season and are willing to wait for Alonso, saying “we are the strongest team now which has an open seat for next year”.
Now Kubica has revealed that he would have no problem teaming up with the double World Champion, a personal friend, next year.
“I think there are no real downsides to have him, but as I said I never have a problem with my team-mate. Whether it is him or Nick (Heidfeld), my approach is always the same.”
With regards to missing out on a move to Italian team Ferrari, Alonso said there was plenty of time to come.
“I am 27 and have many more laps to do,” he added. “If I race in F1 for another eight or 10 years, perhaps one day I will again have the opportunity to go there.”
He said that he was not thinking too much about his future with only four races to go in the year.
“For now I have to try to get back to winning as soon as possible, rather than think about 2010 or 2011,” he said.
