Ferrari have fired an astonishing attack at Williams, calling them losers and bad sports for refusing to allow Michael Schumacher a comeback test of this year’s car.

Maranello bosses are furious that the Grove team refused to agree an exception to the no testing rule brought in this season.

The seven-times champion has not driven an F1 car since the start of last year but is returning from retirement to replace the injured Felipe Massa. But Schumacher has less than three weeks to prepare for his debut in Valencia on August 23. Mirror.co.uk

“Guess who opposed the test with the F60?” read a Ferrari statement on their official website.

“A team that hasn’t won anything for years and yet didn’t pass over the opportunity to demonstrate once more a lack of spirit of fair play.”

Williams last won the constructors championship in 1997, when Canada’s Jacques Villeneuve topped the driver’s standings for them too.

Ferrari also hit back at Williams’ and Red Bull’s argument that Schumacher should be treated no differently than Spanish teenager Jaime Alguersuari, who was unable to track test his car before his F1 debut for Toro Rosso in Hungary. Yahoo! Eurosport

“Just for the record, the Scuderia Ferrari had given its approval to let Alguersuari test, but it seems even in this instance someone decided to stick to the precise wording of the regulations,” added Ferrari’s statement.

Massa fractured his skull during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix after he was struck on the helmet by a spring from Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP car.

Schumacher is due to replace the Brazilian at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on 23 August, but has only had a chance to drive Ferrari’s 2007 car, at the team’s Mugello test track last Friday.

McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber and Brawn GP were all prepared to let Schumacher spend one day behind the wheel of the F60. BBC Sport
