Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo has given drivers Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen a daunting task for the final three Formula 1 races of the season: Finish 1-2 in all of ‘em.
And he says they can start at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.
Ferrari’s rivals have interpreted 61-year-old di Montezemolo’s remarks in two ways.
Either he is ramping up the pressure on Massa to overtake Lewis Hamilton in the world championship, while calling on reigning champ Raikkonen to support the Brazilian to the hilt.
Or he is coming out fighting after Ferrari’s shocking Singapore Grand Prix, in which the humiliated team lost vital ground to Hamilton and McLaren-Mercedes.
Di Montezemelo said: “There are three races yet and I have faith in all Ferrari’s men who have always demonstrated they’re able to fight to the last metre in every circumstance.
“We saw that last year in the final race in Brazil (when Raikkonen beat Hamilton to the title by a point). The car is the best, Massa is the best, and I expect Raikkonen to show us he is world champion in these last three races.
“I expect Massa and Raikkonen to always finish first and second in the three remaining races. In any case, ahead of McLaren.”
