Ferrari have drafted in race legend Michael Schumacher in a bid to stop danger junkie Lewis Hamilton building a decisive edge in the world championship.
The seven-times world champion is a consultant to Maranello’s engineers - and he could well be needed at the German Grand Prix after Hamilton left the field in his wake in the first practice.
But the German record-breaker’s famously analytical approach in the cockpit will be even more warmly welcomed.
Hamilton, 23, is convinced McLaren’s real speed has been disguised by recent events.
In Montreal he was leading from pole until he smashed into Kimi Raikkonen in the pit and a 10-place grid penalty hampered his chances in the next race in France.
The McLaren ace was dominant at Silverstone, winning by 68 seconds in the downpour but Ferarri’s form was disguised by a strategy blunder when they chose the wrong tyres.
Hamilton said: “I think we’re better than we’ve looked at some of the recent races.”
“My parents know about dangers and that is why they get nervous but the danger part is the most exciting.”
“Before I started racing my dad knew I wasn’t scared of anything. No matter how much he pushed in his road car to frighten me or how many rollercoaster rides I went on or how many silly jumps I did, he always knew if someone dared me I would do it.”
“I’ve always been someone who went further than others.”
