Spaniard Fernando Alonso topped the times in Friday morning’s opening practice for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix.

The 29-year-old Ferrari driver posted a time of one minute 00.797 during the first half of the session at a dark, dingy, and extremely wet Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

F1 Standings Ahead of Belgian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel was third until the closing stages, when Robert Kubica pushed his Renault ahead with 1m 02.081s, leaving Vettel fourth on 2m 02.450s. Right behind the Red Bull came Adrian Sutil, starring again for Force India with 2m 02.646s, then Jenson Button in the second McLaren on 2m 02.913s and birthday boy Mark Webber on 2m 02.926s in the second Red Bull.

Kamui Kobayashi was eighth for BMW Sauber with 2m 03.401s, followed by Rubens Barrichello on 2m 03.424s for Williams, Michael Schumacher on 2m 03.489s for Mercedes, Felipe Massa on 2m 03.601s in the second Ferrari, Nico Hulkenberg on 2m 03.649s in the second Williams, Nico Rosberg on 2m 03.654s in the second Mercedes and Pedro de la Rosa on 2m 03.851s in the second BMW Sauber.

Vitantonio Liuzzi managed 2m 04.145s in his Force India to head Jaime Alguersuari’s Toro Rosso (2m 04.250s) and Vitaly Petrov’s Renault on 2m 04.690s, then Sebastien Buemi did 2m 05.680s in the other Toro Rosso which left him just ahead of Virgin duo Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi on 2m 05.697s and 2m 06.695s respectively. Lotus’s Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen sandwiched Bruno Senna’s HRT, with 2m 07.189s and 2m 07.955s to the Brazilian’s 2m 07.737s. At the back, Sakon Yamamoto lapped his HRT in 2m 10.507s.
