Felipe Massa was the fastest driver in Friday’s second practice session, making the most of improving conditions as the track dried to finish ahead of Nico Rosberg and Kamui Kobayashi.

The McLaren pair of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel were fourth and fifth, with the Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel back in 14th and 18th.

But the conditions were so bad for much of the afternoon that the times were mostly meaningless.

The rain started to fall before the afternoon session got under way, and that restricted the number of cars taking part early on. Massa produced his time of 1min 49.967sec just before the end, knocking Rosberg off his perch. The Guardian

Force India team-mates Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta were next up, with Rubens Barrichello (Williams), Sergio Perez (Sauber) and Sebastien Buemi (Toro Rosso) completing the top 10.

Michael Schumacher (Mercedes) and Webber (Red Bull) went quickly when the rain first began to ease, but such was the flurry of last-minute improvements that they were demoted to 12th and 14th respectively.

Fernando Alonso was 15th in the second Ferrari, while runaway world championship leader Sebastian Vettel languished in 18th – but times were largely meaningless as an indicator of dry-weather form as the rain left only unanswered questions about the impact of the ban on off-throttle blown diffusers that takes effect this weekend.
