Jenson Button took a stunning victory in a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix by passing Sebastian Vettel on the last lap.

Vettel spun his Red Bull under pressure to gift the win to Button, who recovered after a collision with McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Red Bull’s Mark Webber was third to deprive Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher of a podium place.

Vettel now leads the championship by 60 points from Button.

An incident-packed race saw the safety car used five times and included a two-hour stoppage for heavy rain. Button himself made five pit stops on his way to victory as well as an enforced visit to the pits for a drive-through penalty for speeding under the safety car.

An emotional Button described the win as possibly the best of his career. BBC Sport

Vettel, who led for the majority of the race through all the chaos, said: “Of course I’m disappointed.

‘I was probably too conservative at the last safety car and I did not open up enough of a gap.

‘Then when it came down to the fight at the end the mistake was down to me, I locked up the rear. When there is only one line I ended up in the wet.

‘It is still a good day as many mistakes were made and cars did not finish, yet we’ve picked up good points.’ Daily Mail

Vitaly Petrov finishing fifth ahead of Massa and Kobayashi - the Ferrari and Sauber almost in a dead heat across the finishing line.

Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari finished eighth ahead of Williams driver Rubens Barrichello, with Sebastien Buemi (Toro Rosso) completing the points finishers. SkySports
