Red Bull
Sebastian Vettel, 1m 18.549s, P5/1m 16.877s, P1
Mark Webber, 1m 19.609s, P14/1m 17.273s, P4

Vettel ended his day feeling that things were looking good for Red Bull after dominating the afternoon session even though he felt it was more like rally cross than Formula One racing. Webber had a pretty good day too, and said he was pleasantly surprised with their pace.

Ferrari
Fernando Alonso, 1m 18.728s, P7/1m 16.963s, P2
Felipe Massa, 1m 19.511s, P12/1m 17.401s, P5

Ferrari looked much stronger here than they did in Turkey, thanks to the lower downforce nature of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Alonso still insisted that Friday results are meaningless despite running through various aero and brake permutations, while Massa said the tyre degradation made it a difficult day.

Mercedes GP
Nico Rosberg, 1m 18.356s, P4/1m 17.151s, P3
Michael Schumacher, 1m 18.285s, P2/1m 17.688s, P9

Rosberg said he’d had a difficult day but was very pleased with the set-up changes the team made as it progressed. Schumacher said he made progress in the morning but that some handling issues carried over into the afternoon. He doesn’t expect Mercedes to be higher than third best team on Saturday.

Force India
Adrian Sutil, 1m 19.373s, P11/1m 17.415s, P6
Vitantonio Liuzzi, 1m 19.097s, P8/1m 17.903s, P10

Sutil lost a lot of time in the morning with undisclosed mechanical ailments, but he got going in the afternoon and said he was happy with an afternoon experiment with the switchable rear wing. Liuzzi said he was happy with the balance of his new (old, pre-Spain) chassis in the morning, but struggled for balance on the option tyres in the afternoon. After problems in Turkey he wasn’t running the switchable rear wing on his car.

McLaren
Lewis Hamilton, 1m 18.352s, P3/1m 17.522s, P7
Jenson Button, 1m 18.127s, P1/1m 17.961s, P11

Hamilton was unhappy, likening driving the track to being on an ice rink. He complained that he wasn’t getting any advantage from the F duct, and that his car was bottoming too much. Button was concerned to find out what changed from the morning session, when he was fastest, to the afternoon when 10 drivers went in front of him.
