Jenson Button crowned a magnificent day for British motor racing by leading home a McLaren one-two as he won an exhilarating Chinese Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton followed Button home as the man from Frome in Somerset did exactly what he did last year – win in Shanghai and lead the Formula One world championship.
It was the first all-British line-up on the first two steps of the podium for 11 years, when Eddie Irvine won in Austria for Ferrari with David Coulthard second in a McLaren. But Button and Hamilton went one better by representing the same team - McLaren.
It was another extraordinary performance from Button. So many wrote him off before the start of the season, expecting him to be pounded into submission by a rampant and aggressive Hamilton.
But behind Button’s grin is a spine of steel, which he showed in abundance in the closing minutes as he struggled with a car determined to shred every bit of rubber on its high-speed wheels with Hamilton closing like a jet fighter going in for the kill. At the chequered flag, they were 50 metres apart to celebrate a victory that stunned Formula One. Times Online
German Nico Rosberg got his second successive third place for Mercedes behind the two Britons with Spain’s Fernando Alonso, who earned a drive-through penalty for a jump start, finishing fourth for Ferrari.
