Former Toro Rosso co-owner and driver Gerhard Berger, who pulled out his 50 per cent stake in the squad in December, said he remains passionate about the sport - but that it was becoming unhealthy.
“I had to see Formula One as a business, and I do not want a business in an environment that is unhealthy,” he said.
“F1 is not only being affected by the global financial crisis; our sport’s crisis is also home-made.”
“Formula One has moved on to thin ice,” he said. “The organisers of the traditional tracks cannot afford it any more. The high costs mean that it cannot be covered by the normal sponsors.”
