Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso moved into the world championship lead with victory in the Korean Grand Prix after both Red Bull drivers failed to finish.

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton was second and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, but Jenson Button finished 12th to all but end his hopes of retaining the championship.

The result means Alonso now heads the championship by 11 points from Webber, with Hamilton 21 points adrift.

Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher was fourth and Renault’s Robert Kubica fifth.

With only two races remaining, however, Alonso insisted nothing had really changed.

“We know with the new points system everything can change in one race - if you don’t score, you lose 25 points to your opponents,” said the Spaniard.

Hamilton said it was a great result.

“My tyres were shot at the end, so it was just about trying to get the car home,” he said. BBC Sport

Two laps after the cars were finally released from behind the safety car, Webber ran slightly wide at a corner, putting his tires on the slippery ripple strip and slid across the track into a wall. Webber’s car drifted back across the track, and Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg could not avoid hitting the Red Bull, ending the race for both drivers.

“Totally my mistake. Wasn’t my day,” Webber told the BBC. “This is my second non-finish of the year. There are still two races to go, I’ll do my absolute best.”

Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi sixth in his season-best finish.

Williams’ Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg were seventh and tenth respectively, sandwiching the Sauber pair of Kamui Kobayashi and Nick Heidfeld in eighth and ninth. eTaiwan News

Further accidents followed involving Lotus’ Jarno Trulli and Bruno Senna for Hispania, Virgin Racing’s Lucas di Grassi hit a wall, then Sebastien Buemi collided with Virgin’s Timo Glock.

The Swiss lost his front left wheel ... and the safety car re-emerged for the fourth time.

It prompted a flurry of pit stops during which Hamilton managed to take second from Alonso, only to lose it again on the resumption as he ran wide into turn one.

With light fading, Vettel was complaining he could not see clearly but had more to worry about when his engine blew on lap 46 and he surrendered his lead to Alonso.

The German would have led the championship for the first time this season but instead finds himself down in fourth, 25 points adrift. The Sun
