Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel was fastest Friday in practice for this weekend’s F1 2010 Italian Grand Prix at the historic Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.
Vettel went quickest towards the end of the second session, his best lap a 1 minute 22.839 seconds, which left him just 0.076 seconds up on Fernando Alonso, who was ‘best of the rest’ in his Ferrari.
Felipe Massa meanwhile also went well for the Scuderia and was third, just 0.146 seconds off his team-mate. Massa would almost certainly have joined Vettel and Alonso in the 1 minute 22 second bracket too, had he not had a major moment near the end of the session when he ran wide at the Parabolica and into the gravel. Luckily though he got away with it and the tifosi will now have every reason to be optimistic tonight about their teams prospects for the fourteenth round in the championship.

F1 Standings Ahead of Italian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were next up and between them they topped the times for McLaren for much of FP2 until losing out to Vettel and the Ferrari’s late on. In the end Hamilton was nine hundredths of a second behind Massa and six hundredths up on Button, all signs that the top three teams could be very evenly matched. Yahoo! Eurosport UK
Meanwhile, Webber’s session finished 19 minutes earlier than planned due to a water pressure problem that brought his Red Bull to a halt coming out of the first Lesmo bend.
The Australian, second in the standings just three points behind Hamilton, ended the day sixth overall, just over half a second down on team-mate Vettel.
Williams drivers Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg performed well in seventh and ninth places respectively, with Renault’s Robert Kubica eighth and Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg 10th.
Michael Schumacher, who said in the build-up to the race that he expected a difficult weekend, began to confirm as much with the 14th quickest time for Mercedes, 1.6secs off the pace.
Hispania duo Sakon Yamamoto and Bruno Senna propped up the timesheet, the Japanese driver a full 6.6secs adrift, while mechanical problems prevented his team-mate from setting a time. SkySports
