Jenson Button secured his first win of the season on Sunday after passing defending Sebastian Vettel on the final lap of an extraordinary, dramatic, rain-delayed and crash-hit Canadian Grand Prix.

The 31-year-old Englishman, driving his McLaren car with great courage, speed and judgement after surviving an early collision with his teammate and compatriot Lewis Hamilton, emerged triumphant at the conclusion of an unpredictable and sensational race.

Vettel, of Red Bull, had looked sure to win after leading from pole position both before and after a two-hour suspension of the action due to torrential rain, but he buckled under pressure from Button on the final lap and finished second.

“I really don’t know what to say, it’s been a very emotional three hours or whatever it’s been since the start,” said Button.

“The incident with Lewis - I couldn’t see anything and I’ve apologised to him. It was really a fight from then on, but I kept on pushing and I managed to get past Seb at the end. Another great win for me and possibly my best.” Sydney Morning Herald

Mark Webber was third for Red Bull, with Michael Schumacher in fourth position and Renault’s Vitaly Petrov completing the top five.

Felipe Massa was the only Ferrari driver to finish, in sixth place, after beating Kamui Kobayashi to the spot right on the finish line.

Jaime Alguersuari, Rubens Barrichello and Sebastien Buemi completed the points-paying positions.

The event started under the safety car, as the race director deemed the track was too wet for a standing start. The move meant all drivers had to start will full wet tyres. The DRS was disabled while the track was wet.

The safety car dived into the pits after five laps, and Vettel managed to keep the lead despite an attack from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.

Vettel’s team-mate Webber was not so lucky, however, and spun after making contact with the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton, the Australian dropping down to 14th position. Hamilton lost a few places too, and then dropped behind Button after going wide at the hairpin when fighting with Schumacher. Yahoo! Eurosport UK

Pedro de la Rosa’s return to F1 racing earned him 12th, while Tonio Luzzi beat the Virgins fair and square as HRT won the ‘new teams’ section after a super drive. He was followed by the Virgins of Jerome D’Ambrosio and Timo Glock, and team mate Narain Karthikeyan who was penalised from 14th to 17th for cutting a chicane. Jarno Trulli was Team Lotus’s sole survivor in 16th after Heikki Kovalainen’s T127 broke a driveshaft.

Force India had a bad day too; Paul di Resta was up in sixth place early on, survived some adventures before serving a drive-through for contact with Rosberg, and then crashed near the end and was classified 18th. Adrian Sutil got a similar penalty for overtaking under the safety car, and was also delayed by a puncture after also hitting Rosberg.

Besides Hamilton, Kovalainen, Alonso and Heidfeld, Pastor Maldonado failed to finish. Formula 1
