Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets ahead of team-mate Jenson Button as McLaren led the way in first practice for the Turkish Grand Prix.
The result offered a glimmer of hope that the Red Bull cars, who have ran away with the last two races through Mark Webber, could be beaten over the weekend.
However, Sebastian Vettel’s fifth place and Webber’s eighth are unlikely to concern Milton Keynes-based squad as they typically do not show their full hand before qualifying.
But Hamilton’s pace was impressive as his time of 1:28.653 ensured he finished the session almost a second in front of Button. Sky Sport
Formula 1 champion Button commented on the “happy-pill effect” within the McLaren team when he arrived in Istanbul for the weekend’s racing, following the disappointment of Monaco and the team would have been pleased the morning’s work.

It is also likely Ferrari have yet to show their hand as Fernando Alonso was over 1.6secs behind in ninth, whilst team-mate Felipe Massa was a lowly 13th, a staggering 2.2secs down. Adrian Sutil completed the top 10 in his Force India, only to blot his copybook in the closing stages when he came out of one of the most demanding corners in Formula One - the triple-apex Turn Eight - with too much speed, ending up in a tyre barrier with a severely-damaged car.
Of the new teams, Lotus are slowly edging closer to the midfield as Heikki Kovalainen was 3.5secs off Hamilton in 19th, but only half a second behind Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari. Hispania Racing reserve driver Sakon Yamamoto, replacing Bruno Senna for this session, was appreciably the slowest of the 24 on show, nearly 7.5secs down. The Guardian
