Lewis Hamilton grabbed his first victory of the season in stunning fashion as Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber broke the cardinal rule of Formula One at the Turkish grand prix.

After 39 laps Webber was poised to spearhead another one-two with Vettel in Istanbul to record his third consecutive triumph, with Hamilton and McLaren team-mate Jenson Button in third and fourth.

But on lap 40, Vettel made a move on his Australian team-mate that resulted in the young German crashing out of the race, to the despair of Red Bull’s team boss, Christian Horner, and Adrian Newey, the technical director.

This allowed Hamilton and Button to slip by into first and second and, despite enduring their own hair-raising moment, Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, took the chequered flag to end a run of nine races without a win. The Guardian

Hamilton dedicated his victory to his father, who is celebrating his 50th birthday. He said: “It was quite an exciting race actually.

“I don’t know what happened to these guys (Red Bull), but we got through and then I had a great battle with Jenson.

Button added: “It was good fun, but then after Lewis got past I was into fuel save mode as well.

“The race was a lot quicker than we thought it would be, but three weeks ago who would have though we would battle with the Red Bulls like we have.” Telegraph.co.uk

After the race, a clearly disappointed but diplomatic Webber said: ‘‘It happened very, very fast … not an ideal day. Things happen sometimes. It was an interesting few metres on the track between us.’‘

Most pundits agreed the German was at fault, with BBC analyst and former F1 driver Martin Brundle saying: ‘‘For me, unquestionably, Vettel swung right into Webber when he was nowhere near past him.’‘

Despite the trauma, Webber still leads the title race with 93 points, with Button second on 88.  Sydney Morning Herald

The Mercedes pair of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg finished a distant fourth and fifth with Robert Kubica sixth for Renault.

The Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso were seventh and eighth, hardly an auspicious performance to mark the 800th grand prix for the famous red cars.

Kamui Kobayashi, who beat BMW Sauber team mate Pedro de la Rosa to the line by two-tenths of a second. They did not collide.

Behind them, Jaime Alguersuari brought his Toro Rosso home 12th, having twice set fastest lap after a late pit stop on Lap 41, Vitantonio Liuzzi’s Force India was 13th, then Rubens Barrichello was 14th for Williams after catching and passing team mate Nico Hulkenberg, who’d been forced into a pit stop on the opening lap after a brush with Sebastien Buemi who also needed a new right-rear tyre. He was 16th behind Petrov.

The Virgins won the new team prize, with Timo Glock 18th behind Hulkenberg after both Lotuses had retired, and Lucas di Grassi was 19th. Bruno Senna had a great fight with his fellow countryman, but neither he nor team mate Karun Chandhok were running at the finish.

The controversial yet gripping race moves McLaren back ahead of Red Bull in the constructors’ championship, with 172 points to 171, with Ferrari third on 146 and Mercedes fourth on 100. Renault have 73. Formula 1
