Mark Webber won the British grand prix at Silverstone and then hit out at his treatment by the Red Bull team. Congratulated on his victory over the in-car radio by the team principal, Christian Horner, Webber responded by saying: “Well done guys – not bad for a No2 driver.”
Lewis Hamilton came home in second, while his McLaren team-mate Jenson Button was fourth, having battled his way up from 14th on the grid.
It was a day of mixed fortunes for Red Bull, however, who saw Sebastian Vettel slide from pole position down to 24th, after being overtaken off the start line by Webber and then suffer a puncture. The German eventually recovered to finish seventh.
“It was a great race for Mark,” said Horner afterwards, adding that he didn’t see anything wrong with the tussle between Webber and Vettel at the start. “It was just racing between the two of them, I was perfectly happy with how they conducted themselves through the first turn. It’s a great team result. We win together and we lose together.” The Guardian
Afterwards, Webber described the result as “very special.”
“I did the best job I could and it worked out OK. I enjoyed the grand prix, it was a good fight with Lewis Hamilton. I made a good start and I was very keen to make it my corner and it worked out for me,” Webber said.
The McLaren driver was full of praise for Webber.
“Mark did a phenomenal job today, so congratulations to him. Those guys are just so fast. I knew I wouldn’t be able to outpace them,” Hamilton said.
The 2008 world champion also thanked his team.
“The result is a reflection of the work the team put in. Jenson did a fantastic job today. So that’s great points for the team and I guess we are still leading the constructors championship as well,” Hamilton added. CNN
Rubens Barrichello and Kamui Kobayashi drove great races to fifth and sixth for Williams and BMW Sauber respectively. Behind Vettel, an angry Sutil was eighth ahead of Schumacher, who just contained Hulkenberg’s challenge to the end.
Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi, Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi and Renault’s Vitaly Petrov filled the 11th to 13th places, Alonso had to be content with 14th ahead of Massa, who also needed a late stop for tyres after surviving a spin. The two fastest laps were zero consolation for the troubled Scuderia.
Jarno Trulli’s 16th place secured the new team honours for Lotus, after Timo Glock’s Virgin had separated the Italian’s T127 from team mate Heikki Kovalainen’s for much of the race. In the end Glock took 18th from the HRTs of Karun Chandhok and Sakon Yamamoto, but team mate Lucas di Grassi fell prey to hydraulic problems.
Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari had a good race for a long time after a long opening stint took him as high as sixth, before ending up in the gravel late on thanks to a brake problem. De la Rosa also failed to finish after his rear wing delaminated further on the Hangar Straight. Formula 1
