Sebastian Vettel led an ominous Red Bull one-two in final free practice for the British Formula One Grand Prix, while rival McLaren struggled to get up to speed.
Vettel, winner at Silverstone in a Red Bull one-two last season, lapped the longer reconfigured circuit in one minute and 30.958 seconds.
Australian Mark Webber, showing no after-effects of the huge 300kph crash he suffered in Valencia two weeks ago, was just 0.034 slower with Ferrari’s double world champion Fernando Alonso the third-fastest. ABC Online
Behind Vettel came the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa as he and Spaniard Alonso dramatically improved on their morning showing in which they were 13th and 17th.
Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg also finished within a second of Webber in fifth, the only other driver to do so, with team-mate Michael Schumacher half-a-second adrift of his German compatriot in sixth.
For once Renault’s Vitaly Petrov managed to get the better of his team-mate Robert Kubica, with the Russian seventh quickest, 1.5secs behind Webber.
Lewis Hamilton was eighth, 1.523secs adrift, with Button two seconds down in 13th, suggesting they are either sandbagging or the big update on their car is not working as planned.
The Force India duo of Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi were ninth and 15th, the latter replacing Paul di Resta in the second session after the Scot had enjoyed another run out in the first. The Press Association
Heikki Kovalainen was again the fastest new team runner with 1m 34.339s in his Lotus. Lucas di Grassi was again the faster Virgin as Timo Glock only did six laps; their respective times were 1m 35.479s and 1m 36.640s for 20th and 23rd fastest times.
Jarno Trulli had a slightly less aggravating morning as his Lotus kept running, and the Italian lapped in 1m 36.098s, followed by Karun Chandhok on 1m 36.286s and his new temporary HRT partner Sakon Yamamoto on 1m 37.178s. Formula 1
