Sebastian Vettel beat Fernando Alonso to the fastest time of the second practice session for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Vettel’s time of 1:46.374 was just 0.201s quicker than Alonso at the end of a busy evening as teams made up for the time lost during the first session. Lewis Hamilton was third quickest but over 0.7s off the pace following a difficult session for McLaren, who also saw Jenson Button abandon his car without having set a time on supersoft tyres.

The session started with a host of cars taking to the track immediately and staying out to carry out meaningful running having lost over half an hour in FP1 due to loose kerbs and red flags. There had been further changes at the FIA’s request, with the apex kerb at turn 13 removed, allowing drivers to take a tighter line to the wall.

Formula 1 Standings Ahead of Singapore Grand Prix

As the track quickly rubbered in, so the lap times dropped, with Vettel immediately beating Hamilton’s headline time from the earlier session. Hamilton was confined to the garage for the first half hour as mechanics worked on his car, but rejoined in time for the meaningful supersoft tyre running. ESPN F1

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa was fourth quickest around Marina Bay, with Red Bull’s Mark Webber fifth and Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher sixth.

Toro Rosso driver Sebastien Buemi collided with one of the concrete barriers along the tight street circuit, snapping the front right suspension.

Force India’s Adrian Sutil was seventh fastest while his teammate Paul di Resta had a brake and hydraulic problem that had his car being rebuilt for much of the session. The Sauber pair of Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi were eighth and ninth, with Button in 10th. The Associated Press

Bruno Senna was again ahead of Renault team mate Vitaly Petrov, but it was close; the Brazilian lapped in 1m 50.241s, the Russian 1m 50.399s, and Paul di Resta squeezed between them right at the end with 1m 50.345s after problems with his Force India had kept him in the garage for much of the session.

Nico Rosberg was 15th for Mercedes on 1m 50.790s, ahead of the Williams duo of Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado on 1m 50.897s and 1m 50.937s. Maldonado went down an escape road right at the end.

Heikki Kovalainen was Lotus’s quicker runner with 1m 51.950s, ahead of Buemi on 1m 52.257s and Jarno Trulli, whose T128 stopped towards the end with mechanical problems after he had lapped in 1m 52.489s.

Timo Glock was ahead of team mate Jerome D’Ambrosio at Virgin, with 1m 53.579s to 1m 54.649s, then Daniel Ricciardo lapped his HRT in 1m 54.754s to lead Tonio Liuzzi on 1m 55.198s after the Italian had taken his car back from Narain Karthikeyan during the break. Formula 1
