Mark Webber will start on pole position for the first time in his Formula One career following a stunning qualifying for Sunday’s German Grand Prix.

Rain blighted the middle 15-minute session at the Nurburgring, but it stayed dry for the vital top-10 shootout, and it was the Australian due to make his 130th start who heads the field. The Press Association

Webber is still seeking his first win, competing in his 132nd race.

“I’m in a fantastic position to do it,” the Australian said. “A nice, boring Grand Prix would be fantastic for me.”

“It’s definitely not the right tire we need for this track temperature,” Webber said. “No one envisioned” it would be this cold.

The race could offer the leading cars a chance to chip into Button’s overall lead. Button has 64 points, while Barrichello has 41, Vettel 39 and Webber 35.5. USA Today

Rubens Barrichello, who had dominated an eventful second qualifying session, fell short by just over a tenth of a second in the final shootout.

World championship leader Jenson Button will start from third place on the grid after he was outperformed by his Brazilian team-mate.

A dream pole for local favourite and British Grand Prix winner Sebastian Vettel did not materialise as he only managed to set the fourth fastest time in Q3.

McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen gave their team a much-needed boost by finishing in fifth and sixth respectively. Sky Sports

Shock of the session belonged to the upwardly-mobile Force India team, which made its maiden appearance in Q3 after Adrian Sutil had demonstrated his wet weather prowess to show up other more fancied runners in the rain-hit second stage.

The German then amazingly outqualified both Ferraris to claim seventh, Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen having to settle for eighth and ninth respectively as the F60 struggled in the chilly and drizzly conditions

And to cap an session of notable ‘firsts’, the ever under-pressure Nelson Piquet Jr outqualified Renault team-mate Fernando Alonso for the first time in 28 attempts after finally making Q3 for the first time in 2009. ITV.com
