A warm wind blew off Port Phillip Bay as Jenson Button and his girlfriend sat down to fish and chips.
The winner of Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix and lingerie model Jessica Michibata held hands, sipped a couple of pints of lager and pondered what it would mean for him to become world motor racing champion.
Button regularly broke away from mouthfuls of King George whiting to sign autographs and pose for pictures.

“It wasn’t always like this,” he said. “Not in the last few years, for sure. There have been tough times and I know that this kind of attention comes with winning, so it’s not a problem. Actually, I wouldn’t swap it for anything on earth.”
“I’m sure that a brilliant season lies ahead and I am determined to make it count. I had a few drinks last night — you’ve got to — but my arms and legs are still working this morning. I didn’t overdo it.”
Jessica, in a grey summer dress, could hardly stop smiling. She was looking forward to Sunday’s race in Malaysia. “I can’t wait,” she said. “I’ll be there. Jenson is a great guy and he will win the world championship, of course.”
Button said: “There have been hard times on the way here. Times when I wondered whether I could go on. But I never lost faith in myself. Never.”
“When you have won in many categories along the way and you’ve set fastest laps and won races, you don’t doubt yourself. Even if you did, the team and the friends I have would never let me.”
“The only time I sat down with my dad and asked him if I still have it was when I was 14 and in karts. But no, I don’t now look at anyone else for that reassurance. I look within.”
“You know I have had a pretty dark time over the years and not just this winter when Honda pulled out. Things got very stressful and you read things in the papers that are very difficult to take. You want to say your piece, but it is not really going to help because if people don’t believe in you initially they are not going to believe what you have to say if you are not quick.”
“In those dark moments, it’s not good to be on your own. You think about things too much. That’s why Jessica has helped me so much. She’s taken my mind off things when it’s been needed and, to be honest, when it’s not been.”
