Former team owner Eddie Jordan - who worked with Britain’s last world champion, Damon Hill - reckons 23-year-old Hamilton is making too many enemies on the track.
He says it’s time to play Mr Nice Guy, otherwise the consequences could be dire at the crucial race in Brazil, when all Hamilton needs is a trouble-free drive into the top five to become champion.
Jordan said: “Lewis is alienating himself from the other drivers and maybe it’s a political game as much as it is a talent game.
“To have Hamilton alienated so much is a concern because we all know when you’re in a fight you need as many allies as you can possibly find. He has the talent, but he needs to learn the political wrangling of what goes on in Grand Prix racing.”
Jordan believes the problem, though, is tied to one of Hamilton’s key strengths - a personality that is “too strong”.
The Irishman added: “He comes across absolutely so strong mentally that he is perhaps, dare I say, even too strong.
“There’s a point where you can actually go too far.”
Jordan added: “Fernando has won two world championships, but more importantly, has won the last two races with a vastly inferior car.
He’s won it with a minimum of fuss, no hysterics and no drama and this is the problem I have at the moment with Hamilton.”
