Former world champion Lewis Hamilton has been charged with ‘intentional loss of control of a motor vehicle’ after performing a stunt in his Mercedes road car on a Melbourne street at the Australian Grand Prix in March.
The Briton, who finished sixth in the second Formula One race of the season, had his car impounded after spinning out the rear wheels at an intersection near the Albert Park circuit.
“A 25-year-old Swiss resident had a summons served on his solicitor on Monday May 17,” a spokeswoman for the Victoria police said. Yahoo! Eurosport
“He has been charged with intentional loss control of the motor vehicle.
“The court date is 24 August at Melbourne Magistrates Court.”
Whether Hamilton will appear in court himself is open to question given the Belgian Grand Prix will take place on Sunday August 29 with first practice two days earlier. The Press Association
Earlier, Victorian Major Events Minister Tim Holding had said that Hamilton would not be given any VIP treatment for the driving offence.
“It doesn’t matter who you are, it doesn’t matter where you’ve come from. If you break our hoon driving laws in Victoria you will have your car impounded and you will face the full force of the law,” Holding had said.
“Lewis Hamilton has learned that. I suppose it just sends a really powerful lesson to everyone that if you do the wrong thing on Victorian roads you will get caught,” he added. Oneindia
