Hamilton Pays £200,000 For LEW 1S McLaren

Formula 1 ace Lewis Hamilton has just paid more than £200,000 for the car registration LEW 1S.

Property tycoon Bob Lewis agreed to part with his prized personalised plate after the multi-millionaire racer made him the offer he couldn’t refuse.

Dad-of-two Bob, 57, bought it for his Merc for around £50,000 only last year.

A source close to the deal said: “It may sound like a lot of money but it is typical of Lewis not to care about cost when he really wants something.”

A friend said he had been reluctant to part with the plate but the offer had been too good to refuse.

The friend said: “He loved that plate but business is business.”

For Hamilton it should help to ease the pain of an uncharacteristic lapse at the Canadian grand Prix a week ago when he caused an accident with his Ferrari rival, world champion Kimi Raikkonen.

Speaking after he was given the penalty, Hamilton said: “Obviously I am not happy but they can throw what they want at me, I will come back stronger.

“I saw the red light but it was too late. It’s not a racing incident but it is unfortunate.”
