Max Mosley, who has not been seen at an F1 race since Monaco on May 25, will be at the Italian GP. He said: “It would be excellent for motor racing in every way if Lewis won the title. I’d love to see it, but that doesn’t mean we are going to help him. We’ll be completely neutral.”
Hamilton had 25 seconds added to his Belgian race time when stewards ruled that he had gained an unfair advantage by cutting a chicane. McLaren’s appeal against that decision will be heard in Paris a week tomorrow.
Mosley has refused to discuss his personal opinion of last weekend’s events but he admits errors were made. He said: “McLaren should not have asked [race director] Charlie Whiting whether Lewis had done anything wrong and he should not have answered.
Mosley denied that there was any bias against Hamilton or his team. He said that such suggestions were “absolute nonsense - it couldn’t be more nonsensical”. He argued that it was only Hamilton’s supporters and the British press who took this view, which he called a collective hysteria.
“I do believe it is complete and utter rubbish and, particularly in Formula One, it would be impossible to find somebody who had a reasonable knowledge of [the sport] who hadn’t had a relationship with one of the teams,” he said.
“My immediate reaction was this is going to waste a great deal of everybody’s time which is true, it’s what always happens. A tiny incident and it takes up hours of your time,” said the Briton.
He added that Hamilton remained his odds-on favourite for the championship.
“But, that said, it would be brilliant if he won because he is a supreme talent and when it’s difficult that’s when we see it. He has done a great job and, whilst we can admire, we mustn’t assist or hinder.”
