Defending drivers world champion Lewis Hamilton clocked the fastest time in Friday afternoon’s second free practice session ahead of Sunday’s German Grand Prix.

It was the third time in this disappointing season—for him—that the 24-year-old had been quickest on the opening day in his McLaren Mercedes, having been fastest previously on Friday in Bahrain and China. AFP

Hamilton had suggested on Thursday that little would change in the wake of a wretched sequence of results which has seen him fail to make the second round of qualifying at the last three grands prix. With just nine points from eight races to date, Hamilton currently trails title leader Jenson Button by a yawning 55, with McLaren’s focus already starting to switch towards next season.

Despite a late spin, Hamilton brushed that aside and promptly put up a time of one minute 32.149 seconds no-one was able to better in the closing stages, pushing Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel down into second. The Press Association

Germany’s Sebastian Vettel, hoping to be his country’s first home winner since Michael Schumacher retired, was second quickest for Red Bull in 1:32.331 after Australian team mate Mark Webber topped the morning timesheets in 1:33.082.

German Grand Prix: Second Practice Results

The 22-year-old German won the last race in Britain, his second victory of the season, but has not competed previously in Formula One at the track in Western Germany’s wooded Eifel mountains.

Brawn GP’s Button, who had suggested on Thursday that Webber could be more of a threat than Vettel, was second fastest in a damp and chilly first session and then third after lunch when it was mostly dry.

Webber, still chasing his first win after seven and a half years in the sport, was fourth in the afternoon.  Telegraph.co.uk

Behind Sutil, Button’s Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello was seventh, with Renault’s Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet sandwiching Williams’ Kazuki Nakajima in eighth, ninth and 10th.

Ferrari duo Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen were 12th and 16th. Sky Sports
