Lewis Hamilton ensured he has the best chance possible of extending his World Championship lead after securing pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix in qualifying.
The McLaren driver shot to the top of the timesheet late on with a time of one minute 18.404 seconds on the Fuji Speedway circuit.
Formula 1 World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton did his utmost to break Ferrari’s spirit by turning what had looked like being a scarlet benefit in qualifying for this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix into pole position for McLaren-Mercedes - with title rival Felipe Massa able to do no better than fifth.
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen starts second after lapping in a time of 1:18.644s, while Hamilton’s team-mate Heikki Kovalainen took third ahead of Singapore Grand Prix winner Fernando Alonso.
