Lewis Hamilton knows how to carry the weight of a nation, to cope with their expectations of success and deliver their dreams.
He is expertly placed to understand the pressures, so there is understanding and more than a little enjoyment that the burden is now being loaded on to the only man who can stop him becoming world champion,Felipe Massa.
Hamilton won the British Grand Prix in July, a career highlight which sent Silverstone wild. Now Massa heads home to Brazil, where an impatient nation demands their first champion since Ayrton Senna in 1991.
Hamilton is seven points ahead and McLaren were dominant in China, but 180 million Brazilians will not care. They just wantsuccess.
“There is a lot of pressure on him for sure,” said Hamilton. “When I was at Silverstone there was a lot of pressure. He will feel the same.
“I guess it will be who is the strongest, that is what makes the world champion. Who is most competitive, who is strongest mentally and the whole package. Hopefully it will be a ‘best man wins’ thing. I hope for a straight race.”
Massa tried to put on a brave face, saying: “We are are in a difficult position, but we know many things can happen in one race. We just need to keep our heads up.
“It is not finished yet. Until it is finished, we know that in sport many things can happen. We just need to concentrate on our job.”
