McLaren and world champion Lewis Hamilton have never been as far behind as they were in this week’s test in Barcelona, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa has said.
“I have never seen McLaren so far behind,” last season’s runner-up Massa said.
“However, they have another test to see what is not working. They are a team which can improve from one day to another, so you always need to respect them.”
World champion Hamilton was the slowest driver on track in Barcelona on Wednesday and was not much quicker on Thursday.
And McLaren’s woes were highlighted by the astonishing pace of the former Honda team, now Brawn GP, who are using the same Mercedes engine and were fastest on the last two days of their debut test.
Team principal Martin Whitmarsh, who took over from Ron Dennis at the start of the month, said there was an evident problem with the car’s latest aerodynamic update and engineers were working flat out to fix it.
