Ferrari Formula One driver Felipe Massa has improved significantly after his accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifiers, a senior hospital official announced on Monday.
Massa is conscious, is no longer on a respirator, and has spoken with his family, said Andor Grosz, deputy manager of the AEK military hospital in Budapest where Massa underwent emergency surgery on Saturday after suffering a fractured skull.
“His condition continues to be stable and has improved significantly in the past 24 hours,” Grosz said. “He is communicating, his temperature is normal, and he can move his arms and legs. He is quite drowsy at the moment,” Grosz added. Grosz said he believed Massa stood a chance of complete recovery. Xinhua
Doctors said Massa, last year’s championship runner-up, may have also suffered an eye injury but could not yet tell the extent of any possible damage.
Dino Altmann, Massa’s personal physician, said the Brazilian’s s condition was reassuring.
Altmann said the Massa family is happy with the care the injured driver was receiving at the military hospital AEK and moving him was not currently on the agenda.
Robert Veres, the surgeon who operated on Massa, said earlier on Monday that it was too early to tell how quickly Massa could recover but he was likely to miss the rest of the season. Yahoo! Eurosport
Massa’s wife, Raffaela, who is six months pregnant, said last night: ‘I would like to thank all the fans for your prayers. It’s really helping with the recuperation of our Felipe.’
The 28-year-old was visited yesterday by Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, who must now select a replacement. Montezemolo said: ‘The first priority is to find out about Felipe. Only at that moment will we take a decision.’ Daily Mail
