Intersport Racing, the team for which Californian British based sportswoman Liz Halliday raced last season, have been honoured by one of the leading European sports car racing websites, dailysportscar.com after they were named 2006 North American ‘Team of the Year’.
Halliday, who was named dailysportscar.com ‘Rookie of the Year’ in 2005, partnered father-and-son team Jon and Clint Field during the full American Le Mans Series season last year, as the independent squad secured a fantastic second place in the LMP2 championship.
Intersport’s season was made even more impressive by the increased competition in the class during 2006, most notably from the might of Penske who ran two works Porsche RS Spyders.
The team secured three class wins and six other podium finishes in their Lola-AER and managed a superb second overall in the championship’s biggest event, the 12 Hours of Sebring.
Halliday said: “I’d like to pass on my congratulations to everyone at Intersport Racing for winning these honours. I was really pleased with how the season went and to finish second in the LMP2 championship, beating one of the Penske Porsche RS Spyders, was a fantastic achievement. It was a hard-fought year and the Intersport Team did a great job. We had three wins, which I think was better than anyone predicted, and the team led the championship for more than half the season. Although in the end we finished as runners-up, I don’t think that that is anything to feel sorry about when you consider the competition that we had.â€
Whilst Intersport will continue their American Le Mans Series campaign in 2007, moving up to the LMP1 class, Halliday switches to the predominantly European-based Le Mans Series where she will be hoping to win more honours with Team Modena, becoming the first female to race the famous Aston Martin DBR9. Liz will however return to the ALMS for the season opener at Sebring and will also compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours.
