Italian GP: Lewis Hamilton Sets Pace in First Practice McLaren


Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets in practice for the Italian Grand Prix as McLaren caught the eye at sunny Monza.

The defending world champion clocked a lap time of one minute 23.936 as he led his team-mate Heikki Kovalainen home to complete a McLaren one-two.

Championship leader Jenson Button was seventh fastest in his Brawn with team-mate and title rival Rubens Barrichello posting the 12th fastest time.

Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were ninth and 18th quickest.

Ferrari debutant Giancarlo Fisichella was eighth fastest as he got to grips with the famous red car for the first time.

The 36-year-old Italian moved to Ferrari from Force India to replace Luca Badoer after the last grand prix in Belgium and he was roared on by an enthusiastic home crowd. BBC Sport

Robert Kubica was just outside the top 10 in the second BMW Sauber with 1m 24.813s, ahead of Brawn’s Rubens Barrichello (1m 24.826s), Williams’ Nico Rosberg (1m 24.927s) and Kazuki Nakajima (1m 25.150s), Renault’s Romain Grosjean (1m 25.612s), Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi (1m 25.689s) and Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari (1m 25.742s).

Sebastian Vettel has a new engine for this meeting, his last of the season, so restricted his lappery with a best of 1m 25.951s. The two Toyotas were at the back, with Jarno Trulli on 1m 26.020s and Timo Glock on 1m 26.325s. Formula 1
